Warnes Scoops Player of the Year

All-rounder Michael Warnes crowned a great season by picking up the Player of the Year gong at the club's annual dinner.

Warnes hit 465 league runs at 33.36 and took 21 wickets at 27.33 as his impressive Cromer career continued.  David Turner was the Young Player of the Year, with his highlight being the season-defining 85* that virtually sealed the club's safety at old rivals Swardeston.

Alan Lithins declared Alex Craske Second XI Player, Luke Barrett scooped Sunday Player of the Year and Navy Dave Green took the salute as he sailed away with Most Improved Player for 2009.

Clubmark Award for CCC

Cromer have been given the prestigeous Clubmark by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The award is in recognition of the high standard of coaching, development and community outreach within the club.

Chairman John Graveling said:  "We have been working towards Clubmark for some time now, and we're delighted that the ECB has given us this recognition.  Thanks in particular to Alan Warnes who has headed up the drive towards accreditation.

"We've been really pleased with the coaching effort - it has been fantastic to see 60 or 70 young children being taught how to play the game in the evenings during the season."

Satisfying End to Season for Cromer

The 2009 season drew to a close with the First XI finishing seventh in the Norfolk Alliance Premier Division, 47 points away from the drop zone, and with solid foundations to build on for the future.

Tom Davies men were the only top-flight team to compete without a professional, and to keep their heads above water and pick up some impressive results was a good performance.  Allied to this skipper Davies, in scintillating form with the bat, missed a chunk of the year with swine flu and pneomonia, which adds to the level of achievement from this young side.

Michael Warnes was the star of the season with 467 league runs at 33.36, and 21 wickets at 27.33.  Deano led the wicket-taking charts with 25 scalps at an impressive 19.20 each; not one of Davies' frontline bowlers went for more than 32 per wicket, and all but one dipped under 30.

Richard Charlwood followed up a mystifying run of poor form with 357 league runs, young David Turner gave futher notice of his potential with 318, and new recruit Ben Clarke made a good start to his Cromer career with a hard-hitting 311.

The penultimate game of the season saw a heavy defeat at the hands of ex-Cromer professional Rayno Aresnde, who hit 50 as his Mallards side gained revenge for their earlier league loss with an 8-wicket win.  But Cromer roared back with a convincing victory over Lowestoft, Charlwood hitting 64 and Deano picking up an incredible 5-9 as the Firsts signed off in style.

Seconds Fade after Fine Campaign

Alan Lithins' Second XI finished third in Alliance Division Five after pushing the top two all the way.

The highlight of the year was a ten-wicket stuffing of eventual champions Halvergate, which boosted hopes of promotion, but, although several rivals hailed the young Crabs as the best side in the division, some infuriating performances came back to haunt them.

Two losses away to Melton and Beccles, where the home sides were 60-odd for 7 chasing 200+ totals, and an almost freak result at Bradenham, when Brett Gates took seven wickets with an often-unplayable spell, left Cromer behind the eight-ball going into Cricket Week.  And as the top two accelerated the 2s fell away to finish some distance from promotion.

However the future seems bright.  The batting of Lithins (603), Gascoyne(442), Graveling (367) and individual batting performances from Craske, Bond, and Green amongst others ensured that there was batting in depth to chase most scores down, and the young bowling attack was the envy of many in the league.  Battrick played some First XI games on merit during the season, Alex Craske displayed his huge all-round potential on several occasions, Winterbone made a welcome return to the colours with a great wicket tally, and Kevin Neale was one of the more miserly bowlers in Division Five.

It was a good season all round, a noisy one on the field - but then again without the voices of Green, Gravers, Lithins, Bond, Gazza and Liam (when he played) along with the enthusiasm of Green, Taylor, Winters, Kev & Gav amongst others, it's doubtful that the twos would have achieved what they did.

Plenty to ponder for skipper Lithins as he dusts off his Madness anthology over the long winter months.

Cromer Safe as Charlie Roars Back

Richard Charlwood hit a majestic 124* to secure a vital 23 points for Cromer and seal Premier Division cricket in 2010.

Asked to chase down an imposing North Runcton total of 235-7, Charlwood took command in a superb display of batting, together with Dave Turner who hit another league 50.

With Topcroft losing to leaders Downham, Swardeston's win over Diss means that Cromer are now 51 points away from the relegation zone with two games to play, so can't be caught and will play in the top flight next season.

It's been a remarkable performance from Tom Davies' young side, who have eased to safety with no professional and with their skipper unavailable for recent weeks with swine flu.

Twos Blow it as Promotion Hopes Fade

Cromer 2nds blew a great chance to claw back some ground on the top two in Division Five as they crashed to leaders Halvergate.

Chasing a meagre total of 190, they succumbed to 180 all out and are 33 points away from second-placed Bradenham.

Terrific Turner Sinks Swardeston

Teenage star Dave Turner sealed a vital win for Cromer over old rivals Swardeston to dramatically boost the First XI's chances of Premier Division survival.

Turner smashed a magnificent unbeaten 85 to take Cromer to the win with just eight balls to spare, alongside all-rounder Michael Warnes, who hit a superb 70.

The victory gives Cromer a priceless 22 points going into the final few fixtures of the 2009 league season.

Gascoyne Stars for Twos

Peter Gascoyne notched a cool, calculated 98* as the Second XI dominated their game against Great Melton at the Norton Warnes.

Gascoyne was the top scorer in the Cromer knock of 248-5, with Nick Bond (49) and Kev Neale (55*) also contributing.

Melton could only struggle to 201-6, giving Cromer the winning draw and 17 points.

Firsts' Foiled by the Rain

Cromer's hopes of putting some distance between them and the bottom of the table were dashed at Lowestoft.

With the home side struggling badly at 39-4, replying to Cromer's 175-8, light drizzle forced the players off, never to return.

Top-scorers for Cromer were Michael Warnes with a fine 37 and Ben Clarke with another hard-hitting 32.  Deano and Warnes were doing the damage in the Lowestoft innings with two wickets apiece when the rains came.

Cromer's 10 points inches them further from Topcroft, who were well beaten by North Runcton, but it's still squeaky bum time in the Norfolk Alliance Premier Division.

Another Star Showing from Craske

Sixteen-year-old Alex Craske almost pulled off a remarkable win for the Second XI against Wanderers at the Norton Warnes.

Chasing the visitor's 222-8, Cromer were teetering at 54-4 before Craske came to the crease and set about the Wanderer's attack with a consumate 55, together with a fine 31 from John Battrick.   However Craske was bowled with an unlikely victory in sight, and final pair Nathan Taylor and Ben Zelos first took the score to 90% of the total and then saw out the final few overs with some style.

Cromer's 13 points was not what they would have hoped for, but it was still a better result than was looking likely at the mid-point stage of the innings.

Firsts' Task is Clear

Cromer have their future firmly in their own hands after a four-game losing streak against two of the top-three Alliance Premier sides.

As well as second-placed Mallards, the First XI play fellow strugglers Lowestoft twice, Swardeston and North Runcton in the final few league fixtures of the season, and, with their current league position third from bottom, they can ensure their safety with good results in the next set of matches.

With Tom Davies still out ill, his side put up a good fight against third-placed Acle, restricting the visitors to 219-8, but succumbing to 132 all out with Charlie and Ben Clarke the leading runscorers.

Job Done for Twos

All-rounder Alex Craske was the star for Cromer Twos as they shrugged aside Rocklands to keep up the pressure on the top two in Alliance Division Five.

Rocklands were held to 179 and Craske took command with a superb 66, together with a John Battrick 30*, to seal another 21 points.

The seconds were the big winners in Division Five, with top two Halvergate and Bradenham only picking up winning draws worth 17 and 16 points respectively.  Alan Lithins' men now bookend Cricket Week with successive home games against Wanderers and Great Melton, knowing that they are in pole position to take advantage of any slipups by the leaders. After that, they travel to Halvergate for what is shaping up to be the crunch game of the year.

Normal Service Resumed at the Norton

Cromer Seconds put matters right against Bradenham with a overwhelmingly dominant winning draw.

Bradenham had inflicted a rare defeat on the twos in the previous fixture, but Alan Lithins led from the front with a majestic second league hundred of the season as the home side posted a formidable 218-6.

Alex Craske took three wickets as Bradenham folded to 58-6, but Cromer were frustrated as the visitors then decided to shut up shop, making no effort to go for the runs and finishing on 86-7.  Kevin Neale ended up with the remarkable figures of 7-7-0-1, but the Cromer bowlers just couldn't quite force the win.

The First XI slipped to a heavy defeat at high-flying Acle, being dismissed for 77 and then watching as the home side knocked off the runs without loss

Double Defeat for Cromer

Cromer suffered a miserable Saturday as both sides lost in the Norfolk Alliance.

Tom Davies' First XI crashed to a five-wicket defeat to leaders Downham Market at the Norton Warnes, while the Second XI slipped to a 49-run loss to Bradenham.

Cromer Progress to Cup Quarters

Ollie Kimber sealed an impressive weekend with the bat with a classy 103* as Cromer stormed into the Officials Cup semi-finals at the expense of Division One leaders Old Buckenham.

Richard Charlwood took 5-56 as Bucks posted 234-6, but Cromer chased down their target - Deano keeping Kimber company with 29* - to set up a tough semi-final clash with EAPL side Vauxhall Mallards.

Cool Seconds take all 25

The second XI kept their promotion push on track at the Norton Warnes, thrashing Diss by 120 runs.

Stars of the show were Ollie Kimber with 70 and Peter Gascoyne with 56 - rescuing the innings from 125-5 to 238-8, with the help of valuable Nathan Taylor runs - then Kev Neale with impressive figures of 4-10 off seven overs as Diss were routed.

The top three in Division Five have just five points between them - Halvergate return to the top after beating second-placed Bradenham.  Cromer, who remain third, now face Bradenham away and home in successive fixtures.

Firsts Give Downham Scare

The First XI pushed the Norfolk Alliance Premier league leaders Downham Town all the way, narrowly losing by 2 wickets, but giving the hosts a real scare in their chase of 122.

Dave Turner notched 20, and Colin Brown took three wickets, as Cromer went home frustrated.

But other results went Cromer's way in their bid to keep their heads above water - Swardeston, Lowestoft and Topcoft all losing.

Warnes Stars in Massive Win for Firsts

The First XI pulled off a huge win against Topcroft in the Alliance Premier Division.

Chasing 203 to win in a rain-affected match, Tom Davies' side were up against the clock - the game had to end by 8.30pm - but eased over the finish line with a fabulous Michael Warnes 78*, another classy fifty from Davies himself and a cool Dean Elliott 18* to win by 4 wickets and take 23 priceless points.

Seconds Sweep Leaders Aside

Cromer Twos stamped their authority on Alliance Division Five as the league leaders Halvergate were clinically dispatched at the Norton Warnes.

The visitors came to town with no defeats so far this year, but Alan Lithins' men hustled them all out for 146 - Nathan Taylor, Kev Neale, Alex Craske and Sam Dickens all grabbing two wickets in a high-class display of seam and swing bowling, backed up by a professional fielding performance.

Then skipper Lithins took over with a top-quality unbeaten 81, supported by Richard Graveling's fine 51*, as the Cromer openers knocked off the runs to seal a 10-wicket win and 22 points.

League Wins at the Double for Cromer

Two fixtures... and two great results for the club in the Norfolk Alliance on Saturday.

Tom Davies led from the front as the First XI chased down 203 to beat Diss at the Norton Warnes in the Premier Division, smashing an unbeaten 86 to see his side home.  Michael Warnes kept the skipper company with a cool 49 and Colin Brown chipped in with 25 as Cromer swept to a five-wicket win and 23 vital points.

The seconds strolled to a convincing victory over Topcroft in Division Five, setting an imposing total of 244-4 which featured an unbeaten 116 from Richard Graveling and a classy not-out fifty for Gavin Neale.  The prolific Paul Winterbone then sealed the points with 4-28, and Kevin Neale took 3-30 as Topcroft folded to 113 all out.

Cromer Crush Runcton to Progress in Cup

Cromer's batsmen came good at the Norton Warnes as North Runcton were dispatched out of the NAOI Cup with some style.

Tom Davies and Dave Turner put on 136 for the second wicket, captain Davies with a great 87 and Turner with another weekend half-century, before Michael Warnes and Kristian Regis applied the coup de grace with a massive 95 stand for the seventh wicket, just five off the all-time Cromer record.  Warnes finished with an unbeaten 64 and Regis 23* as Cromer closed on 273-6.

In reply Ructon were shot out for 194, Colin Brown taking 4-40, Richard Charlwood 2-32 and Dean Elliott 2-27 as Cromer set up a second-round meeting with either Old Buckenham or Acle.

Twos Dominant at Norton Warnes

Dave Green was the star as Cromer 2s took a winning draw from their game against Brooke in Norfolk Alliance Division Five.

Green top-scored with a vital 47* and clung on to the catch which turned the game, as the seconds bounced back from a disappointing result the previous weekend with an excellent all-round performance.  Stand-in skipper Pete Gascoyne (42 and Ben Clarke (29) got the Cromer reply off to a fine start on the way to an eventual 220-8, then John Battrick with 3-35, Paul Winterbone, with two wickets to go with his 22*, and Kev Neale with two each left Brooke hanging on at 190-9 at the close.

The First XI were on the wrong end of a drying pitch and lost by five wickets at Brooke, despite sixties from Dave Turner and Colin Brown in their total of 185.

Parris Deal Falls Through

Windies batsman Nic Parris will not now be in Cromer for the 2009 season.

Wendell Coppin, the Barbados Development Manager, said: "Nic was requested to attend summer school in order to remain in university.

"To this end he was advised by his Dean to attend a number of summer courses and, to my regret, will not be able to commit to the club's offer."

Skipper Tom Davies was philospohical.  "We were bringing Nic in as an amateur and therefore couldn't ask him to sign any kind of binding contract as we normally do with overseas professionals.  Nic has decided that he has other priorities this year, although to be honest his timing could have been a little better.

"Mr. Coppin has been excellent throughout this process and we look forward to working with him again in the future."

The club are looking in to bringing over a replacement.

Future Safe for 10 More Years

Cromer cricket club have been offered a new lease deal.

The landowners, builders H Bullen and Son - part of the R G Carter Group which has strong ties with Norfolk cricket - originally indicated that the lease would not be extended beyond September 2011.  But now Bullens have confirmed that the club can stay for at least another decade.

The new lease offer will be discussed by the club committee next week.

Club chairman John Graveling said “everyone at the club is pleased that there is the potential to continue playing here”.

A joint statement released by the club and H Bullen and Sons said:

"Cromer Cricket Club will be playing at the Norton Warnes ground on Overstrand Road well into the next decade if they decide to sign a new lease with the ground's owner. Cromer based H Bullen and Son Limited, which is part of the R G Carter Construction group, confirm the club can continue with a new lease up to 2021. The Cricket club will now be pressing ahead with renovation and repair work to the pavilion and club house.

"Norton Warnes was the Managing Director of H Bullen and Sons Limited. This became part of the R G Carter Group which has had a long association with cricket in Norfolk, not least the Carter Cup. Cromer has been playing on the present ground since the mid 1950`s and are now in Norfolk's cricket premier league. The club would like to thank H Bullen and Son Limited for making it possible for cricket enthusiasts to continue to enjoy playing and watching cricket at the Overstand Road ground."

Cromer Surge Back to Form with Crucial Win

Cromer's First XI took a huge step on the road to Norfolk Alliance Premier Division survival with a dramatic victory over old foes Vauxhall Mallards at the Norton Warnes.

Richard Charlwood was the star with ball as high-flying Mallards were bowled out just six runs short of their target of 170.  The visitors had cruised to 70 without loss, former Cromer star Rayno Arendse looking comfortable, but the second-placed side then collapsed as Chippy claimed four victims, and Michael Warnes and Dean Elliott two each.  Seamer James Craske held his nerve to take the final wicket as nails were chewed down to the quick on the South Bank.

Earlier Tom Davies had played a captain's innings, making a gutsy 44, and Colin Brown weighed in with an important 26 as Cromer recovered from 84-7.  Last wicket pair Craske and Kristin Regis put on a vital 30-odd and set up the win, which gave Cromer a much-needed 22 points and takes them to eighth in the Alliance Premier.  They will now be eyeing the next league fixture at Brooke with renewed confidence.

The Second XI suffered a big blow in the race for the Division Five title, inexplicably losing a match they controlled from the off at Beccles.  Cromer declared at 230-6, skipper Alan Lithins with an excellent 110 and John Battrick with a classy 57, but then lacklustre bowling and fielding saw the home side chase down their target with four balls to spare.  Paul Winterbone and Alex Craske each took three wickets, but it was a disappointing result and the second time in three games that Cromer have failed to defend a 200+ total.

However, Great Melton's defeat at hands of Rocklands moves Cromer up to third place, with a massive game at the Norton Warnes against Brooke next Saturday.

Turner Back with a Bang in 330 stand

Dave Turner put his league worries firmly behind him with an incredible 198 on Sunday.

Turner's knock came in the Mid-Norfolk Sunday League fixture against Rollesby at the Norton Warnes, and followed two Saturday dismissals without scoring... run out without receiving a delivery against Swardeston, then lbw for a duck at North Runcton.  But it was normal service resumed just one day later as Turner, who last year hit three hundreds in three innings for three different XIs, swept back to form in some style.

Turner wasn't the only Cromer centurion - Jez Wright chipped in with the small matter of a majestic 135 in a massive stand of 330.  In reply Rollesby closed at 155-6.

Turner's comment after his huge knock: "I can't believe I got out for 198!"

Seconds Back on Track

Cromer Twos got back to winning ways at the Norton Warnes with a gusty four-wicket win over Rocklands.

The star of the show was 16-year-old Alex Craske, who followed his 1-37 with a consumate 54 to steer Cromer home with a couple of overs to spare.  Dave Green hit the winning runs, but it was skipper Alan Lithins who calmed nerves with a cool 38* as the home side chased down Rocklands' 211.

After a ten-year sabbatical, Paul Winterbone made a welcome return to the club with 3-51, and Kev Neal and Adrian Buck chipped in with two wickets each.

The First XI went down to a three-wicket defeat at North Runcton, Tom Davies top-scoring with 42 in his side's 151-9.

Narrow Defeats for Firsts, Seconds

Both league sides were on the wrong side of results on Saturday.

Tom Davies' First XI went down by seven wickets to Swardeston, while the twos failed to maintain their 100% record in a four-wicket loss at Great Melton.

Ben Clarke hit 35 and Dean Elliott 50 in the Firsts' total of 208, while Nick Bond's 61, Alex Craske's 31 and Adie Buck's 30 and 3-26 were the pick of the performances for the Second XI.

To complete a miserable weekend, Cromer also lost their Carter Cup clash at Horsford on Sunday.

First Team Return to Form

The First XI kick-started their league campaign at Norton Warnes with a nailbiting nine-run win over Topcroft in the Norfolk Alliance Premier Division.

After successive defeats Cromer realised that it was time to deliver, and they did so with a great performance in the early evening sunshine.

Cromer seamer James Craske took the final wicket with three balls to spare, to cap an excellent fielding effort and a tight display from the Cromer bowlers.  Colin Brown was the pick of the attack with three wickets for a miserly 24 runs.

The home side had posted 171, Ollie Kimber opening the innings with a superb 40.  There were valuable contributions too from Brown and Adrian Buck on a tricky pitch left damp after overnight rain.

An excellent showing from Cromer, who pick up 22 much-needed points.

The Second XI, looking to capitalise on a 100% start to the season, and with a strong side straining at the leash, were victims of a cancelled game at Diss.

It was the only match in the entire six divisions of the Alliance to be called off due to the weather, and as a result Cromer slip to second in Division Five thanks to league position no longer being calculated on average points.

Topcroft beaten by Dominant Second XI

Cromer Twos swept aside a young Topcroft side at Norton Warnes to win by a massive 205 runs.

Kevin Neale and John Battrick were the destroyers, Neale with 4-10 and Battrick claiming three wickets for just two runs to send the visitors dissolving to 66 all out.

Cromer had posted 271-5, Adrian Buck hitting a superb unbeaten 97 and opener Richard Graveling a fine 90 as Topcroft's attack struggled to come to terms with the home side's batting.

The First XI's poor league form continued with an eight-wicket loss at newly-promoted Diss.

Fantastic Cromer Dump Out Fakenham

Cromer bounced back from a disappointing start to the league campaign in real style with a comprehensive 102-run win over EAPL side Fakenham in the Carter Cup.

A vibrant Cromer fielding and bowling display saw the home side hustled out for 141, Richard Charlwood with 3-16 and fellow seamer James Craske 3-25.

Cromer had posted an impresive 242-7, skipper Tom Davies top-scoring with 80, Charlwood chipping in with 36 and David Turner 30.

With no restrictions on professionals in the Carter Cup Fakenham took advantage with all three of their paid players on display, yet it was Cromer's day, and hopefully a great foundation to build on.

Terrific Twos Chase Down Brooke

Cromer Seconds got the season off to a fine start with a great win at Brooke.

Chasing the home side's total of 241-7, Luke Barrett hit a dominant 56, John Battrick and Richard Graveling weighed in with 24 each, and then Pete Gascoyne saw Cromer home with a gutsy Michael Bevan-equse unbeaten 54.

Earlier the welcome return of Kevin Neale saw him pick up three wickets, in a scrappy Cromer fielding performance that nevertheless restricted Brooke to a manageable target.

The first team went down by 21 runs to Brooke at the Norton Warnes, with Ben Clarke's 52 and Colin Brown's 5-42 not enough to ease them past their target of 165.

Brooke Double-header as League Kicks In

Cromer's 2009 Norfolk Alliance campaign starts on Saturday, with a double-header against old foes Brooke.  The Firsts are at home while the second team, under the leadership of Alan Lithins, travel to meet the new start time of 1pm.

Club captain Tom Davies is optimistic about the coming season.

"Although we're doing without an overseas professional - to help us plough some cash into the youth setup - we've retained a strong core of players from last year, and we're still a young, fit side," he said. "The batting looks particularly promising, with 2008 player of the year Richard Charlwood and David Turner giving the top order a strong look about it, and players like Colin Brown, Dean Elliott and Kristen Regis backing them up. Michael Warnes is going to be available, so, with James Craske, we have a decent seam attack too.

"We're also delighted to welcome two new players whom I expect to play a big part in the First XI this year, Ollie Kimber, who's joining us from Bradfield, and Ben Clarke, with hopefully another signing to follow."

Davies is bullish about the second XI's prospects too, after an excellent campaign last year under outgoing skipper Andy van Greuning.

"I was delighted with the twos in 2008 and there's no reason why they shouldn't continue to move forward this year," he said. "It's important to have some experience in a tough league like the Alliance Division Five, so we'll be looking to people like Alan, Pete Gascoyne and Adrain Buck to provide the solidity and to let the young lads play around them - and do their fielding for them, of course...!

"John Battrick bowled outstandingly well last year, and is on the verge of a first-team place, and Alex Craske and Nuggy Taylor aren't far behind.  So the future is bright."

Both games kick off at 1pm on Saturday, and with the forecast set fair, spectators are welcome at the Norton Warnes for the opening league fixture of the seaon.

AGM - Moving Forward into 2009

The club's Annual General Meeting was held at the ground on 9th January 2009 at 7pm.

The club is aiming to achieve the Clubmark accreditation, which demonstrates Cromer CC's longstanding commitment to promote cricket to people of all ages, sex, ability, race and religion.

In doing this the club has introduced some new roles.  Cromer CC's first Women and Girls' Co-ordinator will be Emma Warnes.  The new position of Club Development Officer has been filled by Alan Warnes, and he will have an important role in the forward movement of the club.

On the field there is no change with the running of the first team, with Tom Davies and Colin Brown remaining as Captain and Vice Captain respectively.

Last year's successful promotion winning 2nd XI captain Andy Van Greuning stepped down from the position, with Alan Lithins taking over.

Chairman John Graveling paid tribute to Van Greuning's acheivements in 2008, saying: "We set our stall out for second-team promotion and, to his great credit, Andy delivered for us.  He took a young side and very nearly won the league in a super season.  Many thanks to him for his efforts."

Van Greuning is now in charge of the Sunday League XI, an important breeding-ground for the future of the club.

Warnes in Norfolk Squad

Cromer all-rounder Michael Warnes has been named in a 31-man performance squad for next year as Norfolk look to improve on an ultimately disappointing 2008 campaign.

Carl Rogers' team reached the semi-finals of the MCCA Knockout Trophy but missed out on a place at Lord's before enduring a miserable championship campaign, finishing second from bottom.

Warnes joins new boy Johnathan Trower and recalled former skipper Paul Bradshaw in the squad.

Captain Chris Brown said: "We've selected 31 players who we feel are probably the strongest in the county and that we will be looking to use next year."
