Cromer v Acle (a)

16th August 2008

Lovewell Blake Norfolk Alliance Premier Division

Cromer travelled to Acle with only a few points between the two sides.

Cromer skipper Tom Davies won the toss and put the home team into bat.

Rayno Arendse and Michael Warnes kept things tight and opportunities to score runs were very limited. Although neither man could make a breakthrough they had restricted Acle to 65 runs from 25 overs.

Richard Charlwood and James Craske continued the disciplined bowling and the first wicket fell in the 26th over when Charlwood got Porter (39) with an excellent catch from Arendse.

Dean Elliott then came into the Cromer attack and struck twice in his second over leaving Acle 95 for 3 from 35 overs. Elliott and Adrian Buck maintained the high standard of bowling at the death. P.Munford made 28 but three more wickets fell in the final five overs. Buck took two of these and finished with 2 for 22 from 4 overs. Elliott ended with excellent figures of 3 for 28 from 8 overs.

From their 50 overs Acle scored 166 for 7.

In reply Cromer lost Tom Davies early, bringing David Turner to the middle with Arendse. They put on 58 before Turner was bowled by Lee for 11.

Arendse was closing in on his half century. He reached his fifty from 85 balls and Cromer were seemingly half way to victory. But Acle tightened their bowling and the runs dried up for Cromer.

Just 29 runs were scored between overs 30 and 40 and with 10 overs remaining Cromer required 60 runs with 5 wickets in hand. Franks then struck twice to bring the no 9 to the crease with Cromer needing 58 runs from 46 balls.

Acle were right back in the game but Arendse was still in the middle so Cromer still had a superb chance of winning. The Cromer no. 9 was Liam Davies and he supported Arendse brilliantly at the end, batting sensibly as to not lose his wicket. Arendse hit the winning runs with 8 balls left. He finished 91 not out, hitting 10 fours and one six.

Liam Davies was not out on 19, a superb display from him showing the depth in the Cromer batting.

Lee was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 43. Newman and Franks both picked up two wickets.

A superb win for Cromer who moved up to fourth and with good results in the final matched against Topcroft and North Runcton they could finish in the top three for the second straight season.
