Cromer v Acle (H)

25th July 2009

Norfolk Alliance Premier Division

Cromer’s poor run continued this past Saturday when they suffered their fourth straight league defeat. Acle were again the opposition and the venue was the Norton Warnes ground.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first.

Michael Warnes and James Craske bowled accurate spells and kept the Acle run rate just below three per over. But despite restricting the scoring only 2 wickets fell in the first 30 overs.

With wickets in hand this allowed the visitors to increase the rate dramatically in the final 20 overs. Opener Peter Nobbs was the man leading the way and he was making his way towards his half century. As Acle scored more freely Cromer also took wickets more regularly. Acle Captain Paul Munford joined Nobbs and they put on a stand of 69 before Nobbs was dismissed for a superb 64.

Munford (39) soon followed back to the pavilion with his side 192 for 6 with three overs remaining. Three more wickets fell in this time and Acle also added 27 runs to finish on 219 for 9 from their 50 overs.

With the ball Dean Elliott took four for 75 while Craske and Regis both got two wickets a piece.

In reply Turner fell in the first over for Cromer. Ben Clarke was finding the boundary with some hard hitting and was helping his side go at 4 an over. But Acle were slowly getting rid of the Cromer batsmen and at the halfway stage Cromer were 82 for 6.

One of these men was Clarke who had made 37 from 36 balls. The only sign of resistance came from the partnership of Richard Charlwood and Peter Gascoyne. But when Gascoyne fell for 30 Cromer were 122 for 8 and the end was nigh.

The last wicket to fall was Charlwood who top scored with 39, and Cromer finished 87 runs short on 132.

Newman, Grady, Murray and Porter all took two wickets.

Cromer are now third from bottom so a win away at Lowestoft this Saturday is much needed to move them back away from the drop zone.

Cromer 132 all out (5pts) lost to Acle 219-9 (24pts)
