Cromer v Topcroft (a)

29th June 2009

Norfolk Alliance Premier Division

Saturday was the first of two successive away trips. Topcroft was the venue and Cromer were looking to complete a league double over their Topcroft counterparts.

Captain Tom Davies won the toss and put the home side into bat. Cromer made an early breakthrough when Luke Barrett caught Hancock off the bowling of James Craske for 8. This brought South African Du Plessis to the crease, who with David Todd moved the Topcroft score along nicely. Their partnership of 83 came to an end when Barrett took another catch this time off Charlwood to dismiss Du Plessis for 43. After the wicket of Du Plessis, Todd freed his arms and moved his score along quickly.

In the meantime Michael Warnes bowled the host skipper Goodfellow for 12. Todd moved beyond his half century but was out after a superb catch, off his own bowling, by Kristian Regis for 61. The fall of Todd started a collapse of Topcroft wickets as five wickets fell for just six runs, Dean Elliott picking up 3 of these wickets.

The threat of rain had been there most of the afternoon with dark skies around and the rumbling of thunder in the distance, and the rain came with 5.5 overs remaining in the Topcroft innings and the score on 173 for 8.

The umpires decided to take an early tea in an attempt to safe time once play restarted. After about 40 minutes the players again took to the field and the home side posted a score of 201 for 9.

Dean Elliott finished with excellent figures of 4 for 32 whilst Kristian Regis picked up two wickets.

The match had to be completed by and Cromer began there innings at around so it seemed unlikely that they would face all 50 overs in this time.

Tom Davies and Ben Clarke again opened the Cromer batting. Clarke lasted just 6 overs but reached 22 from 20 deliveries.

The visitors then lost three quick wickets, and Cromer were 68 for 4 from 16 overs.

The two in form batsmen Tom Davies and Michael Warnes were now together in the middle. They put on an excellent partnership of 89. The stand was broken when Davies was bowled by Rostron for 51.

This was the third straight league half century for the Cromer skipper.

With approaching, Cromer required 44 runs with about half an hour of play left. Warnes also went past his half century making fifty off 47 balls. He along with Elliott saw their side over the winning line with less than ten minutes remaining.

Elliott finished 18 not out while Warnes had batted superbly for his unbeaten 78.

An excellent four wicket victory for the North Norfolk side, who chased down a target successfully for the second week in a row. The valuable 23 points moved Cromer up to 6th in the table.

They now go into back to back games against reigning champions and league leaders Downham, with the first match away from home.
